From Breaking Point to Breakthrough: Aaron’s R3 Journey

The Silent Crisis: How R3 Brings Healing to First Responders

When Aaron Krause put on his uniform for the first time more than 20 years ago, he carried a deep sense of duty. Protecting his community was more than a job—it was a calling. But over time, that sense of purpose became buried under the weight of tragedy, violence, and the relentless demands of being a police officer.

Aaron’s story is emblematic of a crisis affecting first responders across the nation. The statistics are staggering: more first responders lose their lives to suicide each year than in the line of duty. The burden of their service often goes unnoticed, leaving many to navigate trauma in isolation.

For Aaron, the breaking point came in a quiet apartment far removed from his daily life. Alone, he planned every detail, convinced there was no way forward. But in that moment, a small photograph—a simple image of his children smiling—interrupted his despair. That photo, a snapshot of hope, saved his life.

A Program Designed to Heal

Aaron’s story didn’t end in that apartment. It was a turning point that led him to the R3 Program™ (Respond. Restore. Resolve.), an initiative created by the American Warrior Association to address the mental health challenges faced by first responders.

R3 is not just a program—it’s a lifeline. Combining faith-based healing, peer-led resilience training, and tailored resources, R3 equips first responders with the tools they need to rebuild their lives. For Aaron, it meant finding a community that understood his struggles and a framework to process the trauma that had once consumed him.

“R3 didn’t just help me recover,” Aaron says. “It gave me a new way to live.”

A National Crisis, a Nationwide Solution

Aaron’s story is powerful, but it’s far from unique. First responders across the country face similar battles. Many suffer in silence, unaware that help is available or fearing the stigma of seeking it.

R3 provides a bridge—connecting first responders with trusted resources, fostering resilience, and offering a path to healing. Through peer-led support groups, practical training, and spiritual guidance, the program creates a foundation for hope.

“No first responder should feel like they’re fighting this alone,” says AWA Managing Director, Anna Heil. “We’re here to stand in that gap.”

Partnering for Change: Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

This February, R3 is partnering with the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo to bring awareness to the mental health crisis affecting first responders. On February 1, during the PRORODEO Tournament at 7:30 p.m., attendees will witness an immersive music and light show, powered by complimentary LED bracelets, highlighting the importance of resilience and faith.

Additionally, a 30-second commercial featuring Aaron’s journey will air on The Cowboy Channel throughout the rodeo, running from January 17 to February 8, 2025. This partnership aims to not only spotlight the issue but also inspire action from communities nationwide.
